Dr Robert (Bob) Gerber

Bob Gerber is a Consultant Cardiologist currently working in Hawke’s Bay DHB. He graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School which is part of King’s College London in 2000. He holds dual accreditation in Cardiology and General Internal.
Bob is an expert in the field of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guided stent implantation and is also trained in implanting pacemakers and implantable cardio-defibrillators (ICDs) as well as coronary stents. He has maintained his credentialing within New Zealand by performing these procedures on a regular basis. He has expertise in hypertension and heart failure as well as heart rhythm disturbances and dyslipidaemia.
He enjoys cycling, trail-running and time with the family who are living in Hawke’s Bay.
ENT (Ear Nose & Throat)
Our specialists lead your care regarding any concerns relating to your ears, nose and/or throat. We are proud to provide superior treatment in areas such as hearing reconstructions, balance disorders, nasal reconstruction, allergy and sinus management, larynx and salivary gland concerns as well as facial plastic surgery.
Common procedures include removal of tonsils or adenoids, insertion of grommets, complex middle ear surgery, sinus surgery and correction of broken noses.
Kaweka Hospital is the first surgical facility in Hawke’s Bay to invest in the latest laser technology offering an unparalleled level of precision for surgery and a faster recovery for our patients. The TruBlue laser will be used by our ENT team for specific procedures such as treating and removal of leukoplakia, papillomas and polyps, Reincke’s oedema and capillary Ectasia and conditions in the middle ear. It is used to coagulate and vaporize for bloodless surgery. We are also the first in Hawke’s Bay to invest in the latest image guidance system, also known as Stealth Navigation, allowing our surgeons to perform surgery of the sinuses and ear more accurately, safely and reducing the risk of revision surgery required.

Andrew did his training in the South Trent region, UK, including 2 years in Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and a Rhinology Fellowship in Plymouth.
Prior to coming to New Zealand, Andrew was a consultant in Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals where he was Programme Director for the Junior Doctors.

Having trained in London at St. Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, Stephen completed his Senior Registrar Training at St. Thomas’s & Guy’s Hospitals London, and advanced paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children London, obtaining Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1991 and 1995. He worked as a Consultant and Clinical Director at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust for 16 years between 1996 and 2012, and was also the Otology advisor to the Diving Diseases and Hyperbaric Medicine Research Centre in Plymouth UK. Also a former council member of both the British Association of Otorhinolaryngology and the British Association of Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology and current member of the Prosper Meniére Society and New Zealand Society of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

Mr Cristian Slough

Cristian is a new transplant to New Zealand. Having worked both in the UK and the USA he is familiar with various different medical systems. Cristian, his wife Carrie (an Audiologist) and their two young sons, decided that a move to New Zealand was the adventure they were looking for and have found working and living in Hawke’s Bay a delight.
Cristian completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Nottingham Medical School, UK 1998 completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees (BMBS) in 2000. His initial post-graduate years as a junior doctor were undertaken in the UK obtaining his Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in 2004. After completing a Fellowship in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Boston USA, he went on to complete a residency in Otolaryngology in at Oregon Health and Sciences University. He then worked in private practice for 10 years in Portland, Oregon, becoming Chief of Staff of his local hospital. After completing his tenure Cristian and his family set their sights on a move to New Zealand to experience the wonderful opportunities this country has to offer.

Mr Christopher Kennel

Training: Chris holds bachelor’s degrees in visual arts, chemistry and biology. He obtained his doctor of medicine degree (MD) from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed otolaryngology residency at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.
During residency he frequently attended courses led by global experts in endoscopic sinus surgery, rhinoplasty, facial plastic surgery, facial trauma & reconstruction, skull base surgery, and allergy. After residency, he completed the Delaware Otologic Surgery & Medicine fellowship where he learned advanced otology, neurotology and stereotactic radiosurgery from Michael Teixido as well as the Institute for Cochlear Implant Training where he completed their 14-week advanced surgeons’ cochlear implant program. Due to the impact allergy has on many ear, nose and throat disorders, Chris completed an additional fellowship with the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and hopes to bring allergy immunotherapy to the Hawke’s Bay region.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. Chris enjoys practicing the full range of otolaryngology, teaching registrars and house officers, and bicycling to work at Kaweka Hospital. Chris feels lucky to work at Kaweka Hospital because of the extraordinary staff.

John qualified M.B.,B.Ch in 1984 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He moved to New Zealand for a 2 year stint in 1986 and began anaesthetic specialist training here in 1987, then returned to South Africa to continue specialist training at the Durban group of hospital, qualifying FFA(SA) in 1992. John, his wife Suzanne and their 3 children emigrated to New Zealand in !994 where he has been in practice in Hawkes Bay ever since. John was granted the Australasian Fellowship of Anaesthesia (FANZCA) by election in 2000 and has maintained a mixed public and private practice until very recently, when he retired from the public system after 29 years.

Dr Murray Harty

A Bit of Training History: After completing basic medical training at Otago Medical School, Dunedin, Murray’s first clinical years were spent at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton. Six months as a junior in the Department of Anaesthesia introduced him to the specialty. His initial enthusiasm was confirmed by two years in the UK, both working in anaesthesia and travelling. Murray returned to New Zealand to commence specialty anaesthesia training in 1990 and gained his FANZCA in 1995.
In 1996 he was appointed as a Specialist Anaesthetist in Hawke’s Bay. Murray initially worked in ICU, Public Anaesthesia and Private Practice for five years, before stopping ICU work to concentrate on anaesthesia. He was Head of Department of Anaesthesia from 2010 until 2016.

Mr Bevan Jenkins

Originally from Auckland, Bevan worked in the Hawke’s Bay Hospital twice during junior doctor rotations. He returned permanently in 2017 to take up a post as a Consultant General Surgeon, establishing a practice in both the public and private sector and he is married to a local GP.
Bevan completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Human Biology (BHB) in 2003 and a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 2006. Post-graduate years as a junior doctor were undertaken in Hawke’s Bay, Auckland, Rotorua, New Plymouth and Palmerston North. Specialist General Surgical training was completed over that time with admission as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. Post-fellowship training undertaken in 2016 at the Royal Darwin Hospital in Rural and Trauma Surgery. Sid returns to the Hawke’s Bay as a Consultant General Surgeon after commencing his surgical training here as a registrar in 2008. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 2004 and was awarded the Stanley Batchelor Memorial Prize in Surgery.
His Specialist General Surgical training was completed throughout the North Island and he was admitted to the fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015. Post fellowship training in Breast and Endocrine surgery was undertaken at Waikato Hospital and he took a consultant position in Palmerston North. He moved with his wife and two sons to practise in Hawke’s Bay in 2020.

Jevon returns to the Hawkes Bay as a Specialist General and Colorectal Surgeon having spent a year here for surgical training. Originally from the UK he completed his undergraduate training through the University of London (2005) and subsequently moved to New Zealand in 2007. He undertook his Surgical training in New Zealand, completing this in 2019 to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Australasian Surgeons (FRACS). Following this Jevon was accepted into sub-specialist colorectal and proctology training through the Colorectal Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ) and was based in Australia for 2 years before taking up a consultant post in the Hawke’s Bay in 2022.
During his training, Jevon also embarked on a PhD in perioperative care through The University of Auckland. This was completed in 2018 and for which he received the prestigious colorectal Mark Killingback prize in 2014 from the Royal College of Australasian Surgeons (RACS). He is also accredited for both advanced colonoscopy and gastroscopy. Jevon is married with two children.

Mr James Tan

James is a Specialist Bariatric and General Surgeon. Originally from Wellington, he completed medical school training through the University of Otago. He then trained in General Surgery at a variety of hospitals throughout New Zealand. Following this, James completed post-fellowship training in General Surgery at North Shore Hospital, Auckland, followed by sub-specialty training in Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Austin Health, Melbourne. He has now returned to the Hawke’s Bay, where he also has a position in the public sector as a Consultant General Surgeon.

Dr Kirsten Gaerty

Kirsten is a consultant Obstetrician Gynaecologist and has obtained both her Medical degree and a Post-graduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology from the University of Otago. Subsequent to these accomplishments she embarked upon her Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist training and completed this in 2014 upon being awarded her Fellowship (FRANZCOG).
She has a special interest in complex obstetrics and completed an 18 month Fellowship (Mater Mothers Hospital, Brisbane) in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Whilst in Brisbane Kirsten also completed the highly complementary DDU (a post-graduate Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound).
Kirsten provides care in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Obstetric interests and expertise are outlined above and areas of interest in gynaecology include pre-conception counselling, fertility assessment and the management of heavy periods. Kirsten is involved in quality improvement in her role at the DHB and strives to provide up to date evidence based practice and is a senior Clinical lecturer for the university of Otago. Kirsten works closely with Dr Elaine White in their practice ALL WOMEN obstetrics and gynaecology.

Dr Liz Insull is a New Zealand and UK trained Oculoplastic and Ophthalmic surgeon based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Liz is the only member of the Australian, New Zealand Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons (ANZSOPS) in Hawke’s Bay.
Liz is the Clinical Director for Ophthalmology at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and is Vice-Chair on the New Zealand branch executive of RANZCO. She sits on the Women in Ophthalmology advisory board.
Liz was awarded 2021 ‘Trainer of Excellence’ by trainees in RANZCO’s New Zealand network.
Liz graduated in 2006 from the University of Otago with a medical and BSC (Neuroscience) degree. He also worked at Palmerston North and Auckland prior to completing his training at the Royal North Shore hospital in Sydney Australia in 2019. Following this he returned to Hawke’s Bay as a consultant surgeon with a special interest in Uro-oncology and Uro-reconstruction.
